Requesting a Copy


You may request a copy by doing one of the following:
  • In Person: Fill out a records request form in the office of the Clerk of the District Court
  • By Mail: Print out the Records Request Form, fill it out and mail it to the Clerk of the District Court, Attn. Records, 111 E. 11th St. , Lawrence , KS 66044.
  • By Fax: Print out the Records Request Form, fill it out and fax it to (785) 832-5258.
  • By Email: Provide the pertinent information on the Records Request Form in an email and send it to Cindy Thornton at courtrecords@douglas-county.com.
The court has 72 hours to respond to your request.

The costs of copying and certifying public records by the Clerk of the District Court's office are set forth below:

Looking at the Case Files


To look at the physical case files, go to the Clerk of the District Court, and complete a 'Records Request: Online Submittal' (PDF format) indicating your desire to see the case. Case files must be viewed in the Clerk's Office and must not be disassembled.

The electronic case records can be viewed in the Clerk's Office but are not publicly available via the Internet at this time.



Public Access Computers


Electronic case records can be viewed on public access computers in the lobby of the Clerk of the District Court, which is open 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. They are not available via the Internet at this time. You can look up cases by party name or by case number. Criminal records go back to 1989; civil records go back to 1992.

The electronic records for civil and criminal cases provide the following information: party names, case filings, court payments, criminal charges, and court dates.
