Welcome to the home page for the Sustainability Department of Douglas County, Kansas.

Sustainability means balancing the needs of the economy, environment, and society. Together, we can create a vibrant economy, a healthy environment, and a livable society for all Douglas County residents – today and into the future.

Currently, we're working to address sustainability in our operations by reducing the energy use in our buildings and utilizing the free renewable power of the sun where it's appropriate. We also recycle in many of our County buildings and are working to expand.

Our Food Policy Council is working to suggest policies to create a robust local food system – honoring our County's agricultural heritage and building our local economy
